Mornings on the Mall

Tuesday June 6, 2017

Hosts: Mary Walter and Vince Coglianese

5am – A/B Should Air traffic Control be Privatized? Trump promises ‘cheaper, faster and safer travel’ with private air traffic control (CNN) President Trump announced plans Monday to privatize the nation’s air traffic control system, arguing that it is the best way to modernize the system. “We live in a modern age, but our air traffic control system is stuck, painfully, in the past,” he said at a White House event attended by current and former transportation department officials. “Americans can look forward to cheaper, faster and safer travel.” He argued that moving the system to a private non-profit corporation will help speed up the shift from using land-based radar to using more precise GPS tools. Trump and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the change would also reduce costs and fuel consumption for airlines.

5am – C          DHS Officers Humiliate Judges by Enforcing Immigration Laws, Declares Judge Judges are humiliated and dehumanized whenever they must enforce the nation’s immigration laws, according to a senior judge on the far-left Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The judge’s cry of outrage came when he could not block the orderly repatriation of an illegal immigrant who has two drunk driving convictions, plus a U.S. wife and three children. “We are unable to prevent [Andres] Magana Ortiz’s removal, yet it is contrary to the values of this nation and its legal system,” complained Judge Stephen Reinhardt, who wishes to extend citizens’ rights to illegal foreign migrants

5am – D Accused NSA leaker Reality Leigh Winner left easily followed trail, FBI says (USA Today) The investigation that led to the arrest of a federal contractor on charges of leaking classified material that was published by The Intercept website apparently was not the stuff of big-budget Hollywood spy films. The affidavit filed Monday against Reality Leigh Winner, 25, states that federal authorities contacted the FBI on Thursday and said a “News Outlet” had reached out two days earlier relating to an upcoming story. The Intercept, which published its story Monday, apparently provided authorities with a copy of a top-secret NSA document discussing details of alleged Russian interference in U.S. elections. Officials quickly determined the information was classified.

5am– E   Think You Know What Trump Will Tweet During The Comey Hearing? You Can Bet On It (Daily Caller)
Donald Trump tweets like no president before him — so much so that online gambling sites are taking bets on what he will tweet when former FBI director James Comey goes before the senate on Thursday. Online gambling site betonline.ag is setting odds for how many times certain words will come up in the almost inevitable tweet storm posted by Trump’s @realDonaldTrump and @POTUS accounts on the day of the hearing. As of now, the words listed are: Comey, fake, dishonest and believe me. Each word has an over and under option for how many times the word will come up with corresponding odds established for each wager. The odds are listed in typical American style lines which show how much you stand to win if you place a $100 bet. For example the over/under for times that Trump will tweet the word “Comey” on Thursday is set at 2 times. If you bet that he tweets “Comey” over two times your odds are +135, so if you bet $100 and it hits, you would win back your initial wager plus $135 more. If you bet that Trump tweets “Comey” under two times, your odds are -155. So if you bet $100 and it hits, you would win just $64.52. The over/under for how many times Trump will tweet the word “fake” is set at 2.5 times. If you take the over you will receive +140 odds. If you take the under, you have it at -160. The word “dishonest” is set at over/under 1.5 with +170 odds for the over and -200 odds for the under. And finally, the amount of times Trump tweets the words “believe me” is set at over/under 0.5 times with +155 for over and -175 for the under. For some, odds are easier explained with a betting odds calculator. But if you’re feeling confident on how the president will react to Comey’s hearing you might as well have some fun with it.

6am – A/B/C Do you check your child’s social media? Harvard Revokes Acceptances for 10 Students Who Posted Provocative Images, Memes on Facebook (HeatStreet)  Harvard University has reversed its decision to offer places at the college for at least 10 prospective students of the Class of 2021 after they posted controversial memes on social media. A number of the students, who already had accepted spots in the freshman class at Harvard, confessed to creating a Facebook group for the incoming students that was at one point named “Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens.” That’s what led Harvard to withdraw the offers, The Harvard Crimson reported.

8am – E  New Record : America arms itself, ‘necessary steps to defend selves’

The spurt in terror attacks, including the recent two in England, are pushing gun sales into record territory just months after predictions that the election of a pro-gun president would end the rush. The FBI just reported that the number of gun sales background checks for May was the highest ever for that month, 1,942,677, a trend that will make 2017 the first or second highest year for gun sales. The continued growth of gun sales is in stark contrast to some in the media and industry who feared that the election of President Trump would snuff out sales that in 2016 were driven in part by concerns Hillary Clinton would win and implement strict gun control and an assault weapons ban. But 2017’s high sales numbers has show that there is more than politics involved when people consider buying a weapon, especially in the new era of street terrorism like that seen in London and Manchester recently.
