WASHINGTON (WMAL) – A Howard County firefighter has died after sustaining injuries while battling a seven-alarm fire in Clarksville, Maryland.

The firefighter has been identified as Nathan Flynn, a 13-year veteran of the service.

While fighting a house fire in the 7000 block of Woodscape Drive, Flynn fell through the floor of the house, Assistant chief Daniel Merson said.

He was transported to a hospital in critical condition, but eventually died.

“This is a tragic day for the family of this firefighter and for the Howard County Fire Department,” Merson said.

Crews responded to reports of a possible lightning strike at the house just before 2 AM.

Three people were inside the home, but were able to make it out safely.
