WASHINGTON (WMAL) – The 2020 presidential election is more than two years away, but Rep. John Delaney (D-MD) is already hitting the campaign trail as he tries to win the Democratic nomination.

Sunday Delaney wrapped up a tour of all 99 counties in Iowa, which included knocking on doors and meeting with federal, state and local candidates.

The self-described pragmatic idealist said he is not the kind of candidate who gets a lot of media attention because he doesn’t make controversial remarks.

“For me to be successful, I have to get out there early, grind it out, do a lot more work than people who, you know, are on cable news all the time,” Delaney said.

Even though it’s early in the campaign cycle, Delaney said Democrats are eager to talk about 2020 because they want to turn the page on the current administration.

The congressman believes his appearances in Iowa will help him do well in the polls early on, which will get him the national attention he needs to have a chance at the the oval office.

He said he plans to head back to the Hawkeye State in two weeks.
