WASHINGTON (WMAL) – A mother is charged with murdering her infant.

Last November Howard County Police were called to Howard County General Hospital after hospital staff sensed something wasn’t right when a woman came in for care. An investigation quickly revealed Moira Akers, 38, had recently given birth inside her home according to Howard County Police spokesperson Sherryl Llewellyn.

When police searched Akers’ Columbia home, they found something truly disturbing: a baby boy’s body inside a zipped up plastic bag and hidden under blankets in a closet.

An autopsy that was just completed revealed the newborn was born alive and full term and had been strangled.

An analysis of Akers’ internet search history found numerous searches on how to end a pregnancy.

Akers was arrested Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge. She’s being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.
