Patrick Shanahan: Iranian threats against America ‘on hold’ (Washington Examiner)

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Tuesday that America’s deployment of additional military forces to the Persian Gulf might have given the Iranians second thoughts about attacking U.S. interests in the region. For now, he said, the threat from Iran is “on hold.”

“Our prudent response, I think, has given the Iranians time to recalculate,” Shanahan told reporters before meetings with presidents of the freely associated states of Palau, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands.

“That doesn’t mean that the threats that we’ve previously identified have gone away,” Shanahan added. “I think our response was a measure of our will and our resolve that we will protect our people and our interests in the region.” [Read More]

ICE says Maryland county released MS-13-linked illegal immigrant murder suspects (The Washington Times)

Two teens arrested last week on charges stemming from a horrific killing in Maryland were supposed to be deported last year, but local authorities didn’t turn them over to ICE, the immigration agency said Tuesday.

Prosecutors say the teens, Josue Rafael Fuentes-Ponce, 16, and Joel Ernesto Escobar, 17 — suspected of being MS-13 gang members — feared they would be ratted out for an April robbery, so they and an accomplice snuffed out a 14-year-old suspected snitch. They made her strip before beating her with a baseball bat and chopping her with a machete. [Read More]

ICE Previously Sought to Detain 2 Suspects in Homicide of Maryland Girl (NBC Washington)

Two teenagers charged in the death of a 14-year-old Maryland girl were arrested by Prince George’s County police in another case last year and should have been detained, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Salvadorans Josue Fuentes-Ponce, 16, and Joel Escobar, 17, were in the country illegally when they were arrested May 11, 2018, on several charges, including attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and participation in gang activity, ICE said.
