WASHINGTON (WMAL) – There was an ominous find on the shores of a stream along the George Washington Parkway and Four Mile Run last week: three human bones, including a skull.

The skull was found first, and then a cadaver dog was brought in to search for more bones. U.S. Park Police believe the bones washed ashore during last week’s record rain storms.

Police are not sure whom the bones belong to, where they came from or how or when the person died. The Virginia medical examiner will study the bones to try to figure out the answers to those questions. The U.S. Park Police Criminal Investigation Division is also investigating.

Sgt. Eduardo Delgado said they don’t know of anyone who has went missing in any waterways recently.

A cadaver dog involved in the multi-day search had to be airlifted out of the area for emergency surgery after being impaled by something in her leg. Kylie is expected to make a full recovery.
