Metro to shut down Red Line service during the holidays

Julia Eisen – WMAL News | September 12, 2023

Metro announced three key downtown Red Line stations will close from December 18 through the 30. Farragut North, Gallery Place and Metro Center will be shut down for repairs during the last rush of the holiday season. On the weekend of December 22-24, the Judiciary Square stop will also be closed.

Metro will replace a water-damaged beam outside the Farragut North station that is a thousand feet long and a hundred feet wide. The beam holds up the station’s ceiling and is as old as the rail system.

“We are proud of the important system improvements our team completed over the summer and are prepared to continue these upgrades on the Red Line during the holiday season,” said Metro Chief of Infrastructure Andy Off in the press release. “Thanks to our customers for their understanding of these service outages this year. Completing these critical repairs will improve the reliability of our system for years to come.”

Other lines will continue to operate at both Gallery Place and Metro Center during the Red Line outage. Metro chose the holidays for the project because riderships is susally about 40 percent lower than normal.
