Oliver North Marries Fawn Hall, Decades After Iran-Contra

(The Washington Times) — It’s been 40 years since the Iran-Contra scandal caused a sensation in Washington and headaches for the Reagan administration. Now, two key figures in the episode – Oliver North and his former secretary, Fawn Hall – have tied the knot.

News of the marriage between Mr. North, 81, and Ms. Hall, 65, was first reported by journalist Michael Isikoff for SpyTalk, a Substack publication.

Mr. North gained notoriety for his role in a scheme to sell weapons to Iran and use the proceeds to back anti-communist Contras rebels in Nicaragua.

Officials said they did it in part to help free seven U.S. hostages being held in Lebanon by Hezbollah, the Islamic militant group. Yet the sales ran afoul of a congressional ban on helping the Contras and an Iranian arms embargo.

North was a National Security Council staffer at the time, and Ms. Hall, his secretary, was accused of stuffing scandal-related documents into her clothes to sneak them out of the White House and shred them.

Mr. North faced three felony charges, but his convictions were vacated. He had been married to Betsy Stuart for decades. She died last year.

Ms. Hall married Danny Sugerman, the former manager of the band The Doors, in 1993, and Sugerman died in 2005.

CNN, which reviewed the North-Hall marriage certificate, reached Mr. North for comment, but the retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel declined to say anything besides Clark Gable’s line from “Gone with the Wind.”

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” he told CNN.
