Trump Wants GOP Convention Before Midterms

Kerry Picket | August 28, 2025

(The Washington Times) — President Trump says he will suggest that Republicans hold a national convention just before next year’s midterm elections.

In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump lauded the GOP as “doing really well” and “Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

Mr. Trump said Republicans won “every aspect” of the 2024 presidential election and predicted the GOP is poised to “win big in the midterms” based on the success of the past eight months.

“We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper,” Mr. Trump said.

“The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms.

“It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, endorsed the convention idea, posting on X, “YES, Mr. President! Let’s go!!!!” with several American flag emojis.

Mr. Trump boasted Wednesday that he has raised over $1.5 billion since returning to the White House.

His announcement came after his super PAC, MAGA Inc., shattered fundraising records last month. The group said it raised $176.9 million in the first six months of 2025 and in June alone collected nearly $200 million.

The fundraising haul could help boost Republican candidates running for Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. Much of the money that has flowed into MAGA Inc. has come from tech billionaires.

“President Trump is absolutely right — Republicans are winning the battle of ideas, and the American people are rallying behind our movement to Make America Great Again. From record fundraising to surging support across the country, it’s clear we are on track to grow our majorities in the House and Senate in the midterms,” Rep. Nick Langworthy, New York Republican, said in a statement.

“A National Convention ahead of the midterms would showcase the unity, strength and unstoppable momentum of our Republican Party. Voters have rejected the failures of the Biden years and have embraced the America First policies that are delivering prosperity, security and pride in our nation again. I stand firmly behind President Trump’s vision and look forward to working with him and my colleagues to secure a historic Republican victory in 2026!”

A Democratic National Committee spokesperson told Axios that it’s also considering a large gathering ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“Americans everywhere are fired up and ready to fight back against Trump’s reckless policies — including his budget betrayal that cuts health care and food assistance for millions of people,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
