SILVER SPRING, Md. — (WMAL) Part of University Boulevard in Silver Spring is closed today as crews work to repair two water main breaks that occurred over the weekend. Both eastbound and westbound will be closed at least through this evening, according to a spokeswoman with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Two 12-inch pipes burst along the 800 block of University Boulevard over the weekend. WSSC is blaming at least one of the bursts on aging infrastructure – one pipe was 89 years old, although the other was less than 30 years old.

WSSC is unsure how much road restoration work will be required, and won’t know until they have completed the repairing the water mains. However, a spokeswoman said that road restoration would continue at least through Tuesday.
