ANNAPOLIS — (WMAL) Maryland’s bi-partisan best buddies are bullish about the future.
Governor Larry Hogan opened the final meeting of the State Board of Public Works Wednesday with holiday greetings and a proud boast that state jobs have boomed since he took office in 2015.
“This year was the best year for Maryland business in 15 years. It was our best year for job growth in 15 years, as our economy went from one of the worst performing in the nation to one of the best,” said Hogan. “We went from losing 8,000 businesses and 100,000 jobs to adding 72,000 private sector jobs since I took office,” he added.
Comptroller Peter Franchot agreed with Hogan’s assessment and did him one better, predicting the economy is on the verge of “one of the great economic booms.”
“So much money has been parked for so long on the sidelines because of this ongoing doom and gloom about the recession, and now indications are from the banks and the corporations that a lot of that is being moved into investments,” he said.
Hogan thanked Franchot for the positive peek into the crystal ball, before the Comptroller poured a bit of cold water on his own assessment – in jest.
‘Of course, we could be in a trade war with China, so I don’t know,” Franchot dead-panned.
