WASHINGTON (WMAL) — A pedestrian was struck and killed this afternoon by an Amtrak train heading to the Rockville station.

Pete Piringer, spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Emergency Services Department, says that the train was heading to Rockville instead of it’s intended destination of DC due to a medical emergency on board.

The train stopped when it hit the pedestrian, but officials were able to get the man with the medical emergency to a local hospital. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trains are single tracking at Rockville Station and the Maryland Transit Administration warns of delays between 20 and 30 minutes on the Brunswick Line.
