WASHINGTON (WMAL) – There’s something new at Union Station – a lactation suite where mothers can nurse or pump in private.

“Of course they’re welcome to pump anywhere if they want, but this is just kind of a nice, quiet oasis, so to speak, where moms can kinda get away for a few minutes and bump and breastfeed,” said Amtrak spokesperson Beth Toll.

Amtrak installed the 5 x 9 pod designed by Mamava last Monday in response to requests from mothers for a comfortable and clean place to breast feed according to Toll.

Toll said she wasn’t aware of any complaints from mothers about being harassed for breastfeeding out in the open at Amtrak stations.

Mothers who want to use it will need to get an access code from the Mamava app to get inside.

The one at Union Station is the first ever lactation suite in an Amtrak station. Four others will be installed in coming months, including one in Baltimore’s Penn Station.
