Elon’s Twitter Takeover and the Impact on Free Speech

By WMAL.com

After a wild week of speculation as to what Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk will do with the platform many remain uncertain what the future holds for the platform. Musk has pledged to drastically reduce the censorship of free speech previously enforced on the platform – a move that has many free speech advocates cheering but has thrown many on the left into a state of hysteria.

In the first half of 2021 alone Twitter removed more than 5 million pieces of content for violating their terms of service agreement. Musk plans to reduced that number and support the diversity of opinions interacting on the platform, serving a virtual townhall for the world.

Recent Musk tweets on the matter:

  • “For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally”
  • “I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means.”
  • By “free speech”, I simply mean that which matches the law. I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect. Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people.

The reverberation of Musks acquisition of Twitter remains unclear; however, one thing does feel certain – this move will apply pressure to platforms like Facebook, Google, Apple and others to provide more transparency into their algorithm and censorship practices.
