Md. House of Delegates legislating and driving?

Julia Eisen – WMAL News | October 6, 2023

While everyone is advised not to text and drive but Maryland House Delegates are reminded not to legislate and drive.

During a House Health and Government Operations Committee meeting Thursday, two delegates attended the Zoom briefing while in vehicles.

In the meeting, Del. Robbyn Lewis (D-Baltimore) was seen on camera in a vehicle as a passenger, which was later confirmed.

However, Del. Jamila J. Woods (D-Prince George’s) was seen on camera with a green screen Zoom background and was visibly putting on a seatbelt and steering a wheel. This occurred for about two minutes before Woods was no longer visible on the Zoom meeting.

“I just want to clarify for the record that Delegate Lewis was in an Uber and not driving. The other ones that are driving pulled over. So, we’re very safe here, okay?” House Health and Government Operations Committee Chair Joseline Peña-Melnyk (D-Prince George’s) said during the meeting.

All of this comes as Maryland is on track to hit the most car crash fatalities since 2007, according to Capital News Service.
